The Courtauld Gallery

Written for the Courtauld Gallery, this work was scored for viola, flute and harp and performed live at the gallery by Guildhall Session Members.

Inspired by the Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot, the music draws on the sound world of composers such as Debussy and Ravel. The portrait's intriguing history, with the sitter believed to be Morisot's sister who is said to have abandoned her own artistic ambitions, inspired a narrative exploring sisterhood, memory and creative sacrifice. The music reflects on the past through a lens of quiet ambiguity, leaving open whether the perspective belongs to the painter or the sitter.
